Eddie Aikau essay winners named

The Eddie Aikau Foundation and the state Department of Education named the following winners of the second annual Eddie Aikau Essay Contest. More than 300 entries were received from seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders in public schools.

Cash awards totaling $3,400 were given to first- ($350), second- ($250) and third-place ($150) recipients in each division.

SEVENTH GRADE

First: Kyra Vila, Lokelani Intermediate School, Maui; second: Shay Chun, Niu Valley Middle School; third: Jocy-Anna Chevalier, Waianae Intermediate School.

Eighth grade

First: Amber Fladung, Konawaena Middle School, Big Island; second: Sky Berry, Waianae Intermediate; third: Santana Soria, Keaau Middle School, Big Island.

NINTH GRADE

First: Katherine Lee, Moanalua High School; second: Shawna H. Watanabe, Pearl City High School; third: Lyle Ueunten, Kauai High School.

Hawaiian language division

All winners are from the ninth grade of Samuel M. Kamakau School, Oahu: first: Elise Kahikina; second: Mahealani Erece-Kunewa; third: Keonaona Kawelo.
