Bishop Museum, 'Broken Trust' win book awards
BISHOP MUSEUM Press was the big winner in the 2007 Ka Palapala Po'okela book awards, picking up four awards and one honorable mention.
Following them was Mutual Publishing, with one winning prize and four honorable mentions, and the University of Hawaii Press, with three top awards and one honorable mention. The UH Press awards were largely owed to the strength of "Broken Trust: Greed, Mismanagement, and Political Manipulation at America's Largest Charitable Trust." The best-selling book by Federal Judge Samuel P. King and UH law professor Randall W. Roth recounts the background and dramatic events surrounding the ouster of Bishop Estate trustees in the 1990s.
The winners were announced Friday evening at a ceremony held at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park, coinciding with the opening of the second annual Hawaii Book and Music Festival.
This marks the 14th year for the awards, which are presented by the Hawaii Book Publishers Association to recognize the finest books published during the previous year and to honor individuals involved in their creation.

The number of entries continued to reflect the strength of the local book-publishing industry, with a total of 105 nominations from 73 separate book projects entered in a newly shortened slate of 124 categories. These were narrowed down to two certificate awards given in each category, as determined by the votes of the Hawaii Book Academy, a group that includes librarians, booksellers, educators, publishing and media professionals, and other dedicated book lovers.
Two prestigious trophy awards were also bestowed. The coveted Samuel M. Kamakau Award for the Hawaii Book of the Year went to UH Press for its publication of "Broken Trust: Greed, Mismanagement, and Political Manipula- tion at America's Largest Charitable Trust." The work also won the certificate award in the category of Nonfiction and an honorable mention in Hawaiian Culture.
The John Dominis Holt Award, given to an individual for a lifetime contribution to Hawaii book publishing, was conferred upon local book designer Barbara Pope. Her signature style has set the standard for design and production of the best books published in Hawaii for over two decades. The list of projects she has worked on is exceptional in its range, depth, and content; spanning children's titles to Hawaiian language and culture, and all done with extraordinary attention to detail.
