Kua leads Warriors to state golf crown
Kamehameha broke two four-year droughts yesterday by capturing the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Boys Golf Championship yesterday at the Waikoloa Kings Course.
The Warriors won their first boys state golf title in 2002, but no Interscholastic League of Honolulu team had won since that time, either.
First-round co-leader T.J. Kua fueled Kamehameha's run to the title by shooting an even-par 72 to go along with his opening 67.
Kua, a junior, finished in second place, four shots behind individual champion Sean Maekawa of Honokaa.
Maekawa, a senior, followed up his 67 on Tuesday with a 68 yesterday for a 9-under 135 total.
The champion Warriors (596) held off runner-up Punahou (599) by three strokes.
Bradley Shigezawa led the Buffanblu with a sixth-place finish at 3-over 147.
Maryknoll (618) was a distant third. Alex Chu was the Spartans' top golfer. He tied for fifth at 2-over 146.
Kamehameha-Hawaii's Pono Calip (143) took third place individually, followed by Pearl City's Michael Jay Sato (145).
