Mayor honors Memorial poster winners
Mayor Hannemann presented award certificates to the winners of the Sew a Lei for Memorial Day Poster Contest.
The artwork of first-place winners will appear on posters encouraging the public to provide leis to decorate graves for Memorial Day at the National Cemetery of the Pacific and other veterans' cemeteries. All winning and honorable-mention posters will be shown on the third floor of Honolulu Hale through May 31. The winners:
Kindergarten-fourth grade division: First place, Eiwa Colburn; second, Dayne Ramos; third, Michelle Sembrano; all from St. Joseph School, grade 4.
Fifth-eighth grade division: First place, Shealyn Sugai, Kapaa Middle School, grade 8; second, Sally Choi, Stevenson Middle School, grade 7; third, Hye Won Lee, Stevenson, grade 8.
Ninth-12th grade division: First place, Raymond Mariano, Mililani High School, grade 12; second, Napuaala Correa, Farrington High School, grade 12; third, Jan Takamatsu, Campbell High School, grade 11.
The Fields Open in Hawaii, an LPGA tournament, donated $70,000 to the Friends of Hawaii Charities and Ko Olina Charities. Both nonprofit organizations assist the needy, youth and community groups, and provide visitor industry educational and training opportunities for residents of the Leeward Coast.
