Lectures discuss uses of plants
Bishop Museum presents the following as part of its Traditions of the Pacific education program, sponsored in part by Outrigger Reef on the Beach:
» Lecture on "Canoe Plants: The Early Immigrants," 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Atherton Halau. Cost is $5, free for Bishop Museum members.
Discover the early origins and cultural uses of kalo (taro), uala (sweet potato), ulu (breadfruit) and uhi (yam) as internationally known ethnobotanist Isabella A. Abbot presents a collection of plants introduced to the islands by the first Polynesian settlers.
» "'Hau' to Make Cordage" workshop being held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 19 at Bowman Halau Wa'a. Cost: $40, $25 members; includes materials.
Gordon Umi Kai and Ken Keola Ching, Hawaiian cultural practitioners, will teach the history, cultural usage and craft of creating hau cordage.
Seating for both events is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Landscape award deadline nears
The May 25 deadline for the Betty Crocker 2007 Landscape Awards is fast approaching. The four categories are professional landscapers and businesses; private gardeners; community gardens and public spaces maintained by volunteer groups; and xeriscape gardens.
