Garcia tops Patriot League hitters
Michael Garcia (Kalaheo '02) was rewarded for leading the Patriot League with a .414 batting average by being named the first-team, all-league second baseman yesterday.
A senior co-captain at the U.S. Naval Academy, he led the Midshipman with a season average of .350 and was tops in on-base percentage (.445), hits (62), walks (24) and sacrifice bunts (five).
Broadfoot honored at UC Irvine
Jessica Broadfoot (Punahou '04) has been named a Big West Conference Scholar Athlete for the third consecutive year. A junior tennis player at UC Irvine, she also was a second-team BWC, a second-team selection in doubles and an honorable mention pick in singles.
Broadfoot and Heidi Kaloi (Kamehameha '05), who are 12-6 in doubles matches this year, will play Texas on Saturday in the first round in UCI's first-appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Seasiders honored before tournament
Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis players Yulia Ustyuzhanina and Dori Magas were recognized for their seasons at the kick-off banquet for the NCAA Division II tournament at Altamonte Springs, Fla., yesterday.
Ustyuzhanina was named the senior of the year while Magas was named a player to watch. Maggie Deng was the rookie of the year for the West region while David Porter was the West region coach of the year. BYUH men's tennis player Junyoung Kim is the West region senior of the year.
The Seasider women (29-0) take on Emporia State in the opening round of the tournament today.
Vulcans fall to eighth
The UH-Hilo golf team fell to eighth place on the second day of the NCAA West regional at Lakewood, Colo., yesterday.
The Vulcans were led by Logan Goulding's 72, which moved him up to 22nd place. Goulding didn't get much help, though, as Hilo allowed Western Washington to pass them by two strokes, 605-603.
Cal State San Bernardino (557) leads the tournament by nine strokes over Sonoma State (566).
