Ho is remembered at wedding party for Dashefsky, McNew
DAYNIN DASHEFSKY and
Barry McNew, both inventors, were married in a small private ceremony Wednesday conducted by
Mihana Souza, an entertainer who is qualified to perform weddings. The reception was held Saturday at Mid-Pacific Country Club. The couple's children from previous marriages --
Kody McNew and
Kylee and
Briana Dashefsky -- on the wedding invitations were named as inviting guests to their parents' reception. The Dashefsky girls (KHNL anchor
Howard is their dad), danced hula along with
Lindsay Aubrey, Jessica Doctor and
AnaMalia Kia. AnaMalia and Briana danced solos.
Puamana --
Mihana, her sister
Aima McManus and
Iwalani Kahalewai -- played music during the evening until
Nueva Vida and singer
Anita Hall took over. They brought grownups and kids to the dance floor. Anita and the boys tore the place apart. Exotic Daynin, a Miss Philippines America in 1989-90 and known as
"The Grappler" for her JiuJitsu expertise at Gracie's Kailua JiuJitsu studio, had
Kimo Kahoano and Samoan High Talking Chief
Gus Hannemann as emcees. Kimo also danced hula. We would have been at
Don Ho's services and celebration but were committed to be at the wedding event, planned before Don's death. But Don's spirit was strong at the reception. A moment of silence was held for him and many of his old hits were sung by the emcees, Puamana and the crowd. Kimo can do a good Don Ho imitation ...

Marilyn Ferreira, wife of Don's Kamehameha Class of '49 buddy and teammate
Marvin Ferreira, sent word from Oxnard, Calif., that
Manny and
B.J. Fernandez sent them my story about Don. Don stayed with the Ferreira family in St. Louis Heights on some weekends during his Kamehameha days. Both Don, a fullback, and Marv, a big tough center-guard-linebacker, made the Interscholastic All Star team. In his senior year, Marv was the best high school all-round athlete in Honolulu, in my opinion, and probably the best in the entire territory. He made first-string All Star teams in basketball and baseball as well as football. His younger brother,
Rod, Kamehameha '52, was also a good multi-sport athlete ...
