Maui Matsuri challenges manga artists
So here we are, the first column I've written since Kawaii Kon two weekends ago (last week's column was actually submitted for publication before the convention). Which means that it's time for my second annual post-convention wrap-up column, right?
Well ... not yet. That will have to wait until next week, since there are a pair of events coming up worth talking about this week. Plus, since one of those events is on Maui, you probably should know about it now so you have enough time to prepare and snag a cheap airfare out of Honolulu if necessary. (Although if you're already reading this column in some form on Maui -- hi, Grandma! -- you can now be extra-prepared.)
So for all you artistic types, I give you the third annual Manga Drawing Contest, part of the seventh annual Maui Matsuri at Maui Community College on May 19.
Anyone from kindergarten through 12th grade can turn in a hand-drawn 8 1/2-by-11-inch piece, in any media -- pen, pencil, crayons, what have you -- in either Manga Style or Traditional Art categories. All entries should depict a "matsuri," or Japanese festival, theme.
Entries can be dropped off at John Henry Photography Inc. in Wailuku, 59-A Kanoa St., from May 14 through 18, or between 1 and 2 p.m. May 19 at the festival's Manga & Art Exhibit Pavilion.
Submissions will be judged in one of four age divisions, with Maui artist Kirk Kurokawa serving as guest judge. The top three winners in each category and age division will win cash prizes or gift merchandise.
For more contest information, call Lyndra Okamoto, (808) 276-2995, or Gwen Henry, (808) 250-9666 ...
'Kikaida' Times 2
Also making an appearance at the Maui Matsuri will be the "Kikaida Brothers," Ban Daisuke (who played the original Kikaida) and Ikeda Shunsuke (who played Kikaida 01) ... which conveniently gives me a chance to say that the duo will be showing up May 20 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Shirokiya at Ala Moana Center.
The actors, along with people dressed as Kikaida, Kikaida 01, Hakaida, Bijinda and Waruda, will be promoting JN Productions' release of the "Kikaida 01" complete series DVD box set. Games, "Kikaida-oke" and autograph signings are also planned.
