Daly takes no-hitter into ninth
From staff and wire reports
HILO » Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso wanted quality starts.
They don't get much better than what Matt Daly provided yesterday.
Daly -- newly installed in the Rainbows starting rotation -- took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Hawaii-Hilo at Wong Stadium. Vulcans pinch hitter Ronel Trias grounded a single up the middle with one out, and Daly settled for a one-hit, 8-0 shutout.
Daly (5-1) struck out nine. He walked just one, and that was David Chu to start the game. Then Daly retired 25 in a row before Trias' single.

"He threw his slider for a strike with consistency," Trapasso said. "When you do that and throw the fastball 92-95 (mph) you can put up that type of performance."
Hilo coach Joey Estrella said Daly was "spectacular."
"We're not a great hitting team, but we can put the ball in play," Estrella said. "We didn't have a chance. He dominated us from the get-go."
Actually, nearly from the start. When Chu walked on five pitches, Daly was a little "frustrated."
"I thought the pitches were strikes. But as the game went on, I think the umpire got used to my pitches," said Daly, adding that his slider was the best he's thrown.
He got over losing the no-hitter quickly.
"I'm not disappointed at all," said Daly, who threw 104 pitches. "I kept my pitch count down and focused on throwing strikes."
Hilo (12-34-1) got four decent innings out of starter Clayton Uyechi (2-3) before the Rainbows (30-19) sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, including Eli Christensen, who hit a two-run homer. UH had 12 hits.
The series concludes today at Wong Stadium with Mark Rodrigues (7-2, 3.52) scheduled to pitch against the Vulcans' Lars Knepper (3-7, 4.46). The scheduled start time is noon.
