Kahuku hands Roosevelt first loss
With both starting guards out with injuries, Kahuku coach Peni Latu lowered his expectations when his team boarded the bus for Roosevelt yesterday.
Instead of succumbing to the No. 1 team in the state, the Lady Raiders raised the bar by knocking off the previously unbeaten Rough Riders 62-60. Taeja Afalava scored 16 points, and McZeen Ale and Nicholle Nautu, with extended playing time in the backcourt, added 12 points apiece to spark Kahuku.
"Coach said we have to play with heart," said Ale, who scored 10 of her points after halftime.
Kahuku shot 54 percent from the field and outrebounded Roosevelt 35-20.
Roosevelt had the ball in the final minute with a chance to tie, but Iwalani Rodrigues missed a tough 15-footer from the wing with 10 seconds left. Kahuku rebounded and the Rough Riders weren't able to foul Kahuku, but Tasia Kamakawiwoole tied up Keisha Moeai with 1.9 seconds left, and Roosevelt gained possession in its backcourt.
After a combined three timeouts by the two teams, Nautu intercepted Tiyana Nakasone's long pass to Rodrigues. There was no whistle as Rodrigues fell to the hardwood, attempting to draw a foul.
Roosevelt (11-1) had already secured the top seed in the Red East, while Kahuku was already locked in as the fifth seed in the division. Still, last night's win fuels Kahuku (4-8), which played without guards Brittney Fesolai and LeNora Nauahi, with a confidence heading into the playoffs.
"We missed some steals and they made us pay," Roosevelt coach Bobby Keanini said. "No excuses, Kahuku played an outstanding game."
Rodrigues scored 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting to pace Roosevelt. Kamakawiwoole added 14 points (6-for-9).
The game was a series of runs by the two teams. Down 55-52 midway through the fourth quarter, Afalava triggered the run with a bucket off an inbounds lob pass. She hustled after a free-throw miss by Nautu for another deuce and gave Kahuku the lead for good at 57-55.
Moments later, Nautu stepped into a wide-open 3-point bomb to give the Lady Raiders a 60-55 lead with 2:51 remaining.
Tiana Sugui, who had 10 points, five assists and four steals, nailed a trey from the left corner to bring Roosevelt within 62-60 with 1:10 left, but they got no closer.
