University of Hawaii faculty and staff will be able to buy bus passes through pretax payroll deductions, university officials said.

The pilot program is aimed at relieving traffic and freeing up parking spaces for commuting students.

Eligible university employees on Oahu will be given the option to purchase monthly bus passes through payroll deduction. A single monthly payroll deduction will be made before federal, state and FICA taxes are withheld, saving employees money on their taxes.

To participate in the program, employees must be eligible to participate in the state Employees' Retirement System, live and work on Oahu, and not have parking in a university-controlled lot through a payroll deduction.

UH employees interested in signing up for the bus pass pilot program should submit an enrollment form by June 15 for an August bus pass.
