Shutout clinches OIA West for Aiea
Even without his hard-cutting slider, Randy Castillo fired a four-hit shutout as No. 3 Aiea outlasted Kapolei 6-0 yesterday at Aiea Recreation Center.
Na Alii finished 9-1 in Oahu Interscholastic Association West baseball, sharing first place with Mililani. Both teams are assured first-round byes when the playoffs begin next week.
Kapolei, which committed five errors, missed a chance to grab a share of second place. The loss left the Hurricanes 7-3 entering the playoffs.
Castillo, a 6-foot-1 right-hander, threw his second shutout in a row, striking out six Hurricanes and walking three in a 106-pitch performance. In his previous outing on April 14, Castillo threw a 10-inning shutout, with 13 strikeouts, against Mililani.
"I'm feeling sick. I didn't really know much about them. I just pitch everyone the same," said Castillo. His outstanding pickoff move was a major factor in keeping Kapolei baserunners on a leash, and Aiea committed only one error.
Hurricanes ace Oliver Taoy permitted just three earned runs in six-plus innings, but his team stranded eight baserunners. The 'Canes loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third, but Castillo delivered a called third strike on the outside corner against cleanup hitter Michael Kahalehoe to end the threat.
In the bottom of the third, Aiea's Ryan Murakami led off with a single, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and a passed ball, and scored when first baseman Kahalehoe mishandled a bunt attempt by Carey Yara.
Ricky Itagaki later singled and eventually came home on a wild pitch for a 2-0 Aiea lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Aiea broke the game open on a two-run single by Casey Yara off reliever Kalani Omoto.
Two more Aiea runs came in on Kapolei errors, giving Na Alii a 6-0 lead.
