RAINBOW BASEBALL
Host Arizona State bedevils Rainbows
From staff and wire reports
TEMPE, Ariz. » This was not the best way to start a road trip.
Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso knew beating consensus top-10 Arizona State at Packard Stadium would be no easy feat. But he'd hoped his Rainbows would stick a little closer to the Sun Devils.
Instead, ASU (33-10) scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-2 victory, its 12th straight.
"We laid an egg in the first and that was pretty much all she wrote," Trapasso said last night after the Sun Devils rapped out 14 hits against three second-line UH pitchers. They included starter Nick Rhodes (0-2), who lasted just one-third of an inning.
Hawaii (27-17) moves on to New Mexico State today.
Winning the three-game Western Athletic Conference series against the Aggies would help the Rainbows toward clinching a spot in the WAC Tournament.
UH is in the middle of the pack at 8-7 with nine league games left, and the top six of the seven teams advance.
Trapasso said Mark Rodrigues will pitch tomorrow and Ian Harrington on Sunday. The Saturday pitcher will probably be Matt Daly or Josh Schneider, depending on what happens tomorrow.
One benefit of midweek nonleague games is seeing if a pitcher can elevate himself into the mix for the weekend. Left-hander Jeff Soskin allowed just one run in 3 1/3 innings.
"Soskin did a real nice job," Trapasso said.
If the Rainbows run short of arms Sunday, he could get a call against the Aggies.
The Sun Devils batted around in the first, with Kiel Roling and Petey Paremore providing run-scoring singles.
Landon Hernandez drilled a two-run single in the top of the second to get the Rainbows back into it, but ASU kept the pressure on with runs in the third and fourth. Triples by Brett Wallace and Mike Jones were the big blows.
Brandon Haislet went 2-for-3 for UH with a run.
