Punahou’s new play works against MPI
If a new wrinkle means they're getting wiser and smarter, the Punahou Buffanblu will do just fine.
With a new play in the offense, seventh-ranked Punahou got 24 first-half points from center Tressa Torres en route to a surprisingly easy 57-37 win over Mid-Pacific last night.
A subdued crowd of about 250 at Hemmeter Fieldhouse came to life late in the game as coach Mike Taylor played his senior reserves extensively on senior night. Punahou led by as many as 26 and improved to 6-3 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play.
The new play in Punahou's arsenal, just inserted last week, is a relic from assistant coach Alan Lum's days as a boys hoops coach.
"He ran it for a while in the '90s," Taylor said. "It's an old Utah Jazz play."
In its last game, Mid-Pacific led going into the fourth quarter. There was no such drama this time.
Torres, who averaged 10.5 points in two earlier games against Mid-Pac, finished with 26 points on 13-for-16 shooting.
"My angles were off last time," she said of Punahou's narrow win at Mid-Pac two weeks ago. "Coach Alan (Lum) worked with me, and today I got a lot of good passes."
Many of those perfect entry passes came from Melanie Feldman, who had eight points and eight assists.
"We just needed to take our time and look for the mismatches," the senior guard said.
Feldman, Dara Tompkison and Chelsea Deptula each had three steals for Punahou, which used fullcourt pressure to force the visiting Owls into 22 turnovers.
Punahou's defensive intensity had its down side with 29 team fouls. Mid-Pac had its chance to stay close, but shot only 16-for-34 from the foul line.
