U.S. Army promotes reservists' ex-chief
The Pentagon announced recently that Army Reserve Brig. Gen. John Y. Ma, who commanded Army reservists in the Pacific at the height of the recent Iraqi war mobilization, has been named as the new deputy commanding general for mobilization and reserve affairs, replacing Maj. Gen. Stephen Tom.
The promotion means that Ma will receive his second star as a major general. Ma commanded the 9th Regional Readiness Command from March 2003 until this January. He oversaw the mobilization of Pacific reserve soldiers from Hawaii, Saipan, Guam and American Samoa who were sent to Iraq. Those units included the 411th Engineer Battalion and the 442nd/100th Battalion, which is affiliated with the Hawaii Army National Guard's 29th Brigade Combat team.
Maj. Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr., who served with the 25th Infantry Division when it deployed to Afghanistan, has been nominated for a third star and assignment as commanding general at Fort Lewis, Wash., and I Corps. He is now the top Army general in Alaska.
Jacoby, 52, a Michigan native and West Point graduate, will become Fort Lewis' 62nd commanding general. He will succeed Lt. Gen. James M. Dubik, who has been assigned to take over leadership of the Multi-National Transition Security Command in Iraq -- the effort to train and equip Iraqi military and police forces. Dubik is a former commanding general of the 25th Division. Jacoby was assistant division commander for operations in 2005 and was deployed to Afghanistan with the Tropic Lightning Division five months later.
