Deptula sparks Punahou
Chelsea Deptula had 17 points, six rebounds and five steals to spark No. 7 Punahou over fourth-ranked Kamehameha 47-43 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball last night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
"Chelsea ignited us in the first half," Punahou coach Mike Taylor said. "She's the trigger person on defense. When she scores off tips and turnovers, that's gravy."
The visiting Warriors trailed by 14 midway through the third quarter, but rallied on the shoulders of Analee Viena-Lota, who scored nine of her 10 points in the third.
Kamehameha pulled closer, thanks to hot 3-point shooting by Tiana Abbley. Her third trey in less than 4 minutes brought the Warriors to within 45-43 with 1:55 to play, and they got the ball back after Melanie Feldman missed the front end of a 1-and-1.
Pualei Furtado's 21-footer from the left wing fell short, however. Punahou's Janelle Nomura clinched the win by sinking two free throws with 7.8 seconds to go.
The win was a turnaround for Punahou, which lost at Kamehameha in the first meeting.
"They definitely have great 3-point shooters, so we concentrated on matching up with them," Deptula said.
Nomura added 11 points for Punahou. A robust crowd of about 400 saw the Buffanblu improve to 5-3 and keep their title hopes alive in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
Kamehameha dropped to 6-2 in league play, a win behind Iolani.
"It's not the end of the world," said Viena-Lota, who had a game-high 12 rebounds. "We just have to work harder and bounce back. We weren't focused as much and we started off a little rocky. Punahou played hard."
Kamehameha outrebounded Punahou 28-17, but committed 14 of its 17 turnovers in the first half against a swarming fullcourt press. Punahou's halfcourt man-to-man coverage was airtight, as well.
"We had to work for our shots, and we didn't finish inside," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said. "Punahou is a scrappy bunch."
