CSUN advances in MPSF tournament
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. » Senior Dan Rhodes overcame a shaky first game to fire a match-high 19 kills as seventh-seeded Cal State Northridge defeated eighth-seeded USC 36-34, 30-23, 30-28 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament play-in match last night at The Matadome.
With the win, the Matadors improve to 18-14 and advance to Saturday's MPSF quarterfina at second-seeded BYU. The loss ends the Trojans' season at 12-16.
Junior libero Isaac Kneubuhl (Kamehameha '05) had a team-high 11 digs for CSUN.
No. 5 Vulcans sweep Dixie State
Hawaii-Hilo (35-10) won a pair of 2-1 games yesterday for a softball sweep of Dixie State College (34-11) at Honokaa Park.
In Game 1 the Rebels took a quick lead with a solo home run, but the Vulcans answered in the bottom of the first with a Christy Senas RBI single. Senas struck again in the third with an RBI double and Sarah Weiskopff went the distance, making the lead hold up.
In the second game, it was Leo Sing Chow with the complete-game win. Meghan Jost had an RBI single, and Dana Lee walked with the bases loaded for the winning run.
» Hawaii Pacific (26-9) rose to No. 4 this week in the latest NCAA Division II West Region rankings after taking three of four this weekend against UH-Hilo. The Vulcans are now ranked No. 5. The top eight teams in the region advance to Division II postseason play. Humboldt State is ranked No. 1.
HPU hosts Dixie State tomorrow at 2 p.m. UH-Hilo hosts Chaminade Saturday and Sunday at noon.
Hawaii's Fastest Human set for April 28
The annual Hawaii's Fastest Human 100-meter sprint contest will be run again at the Punahou Invitational Relays Saturday, April 28 at Alexander Field.
Registration and trials are set for Thursday, April 26 at 4:30 p.m.
