Kamehameha beats top-ranked Iolani

Nobody's perfect, not in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

Kamehameha made sure of that last night, toppling previously unbeaten Iolani 55-42 at Kekuhaupio Gym.

The Warriors (4-1) moved into a first-place tie with Iolani, which entered the game as the No. 1 team in the Star-Bulletin Top 10. The result was a reversal of Iolani's 16-point rout of the Warriors in the league opener four weeks ago.

"We had good intensity. We came focused. They believed they could do a good job," veteran Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said.

The Warriors played, perhaps, their finest game of the season so far. Guard Lindsay Wong led the fourth-ranked Warriors with 16 points and added seven rebounds and three steals. Analee Viena-Lota finished with 11 points and a team-high nine boards, and forward Rhani Kaneaiakala muscled her way to 10 points and eight caroms.

Kaneaiakala had six of her team's 17 offensive rebounds. Kamehameha committed just seven turnovers and outrebounded Iolani 36-22 to dominate the paint despite the presence of Iolani's All-State forward, Jamie Smith.

Alex Akana, a 5-10 sophomore, stepped up with nine points, six rebounds and solid defense against Smith.

"My job tonight was to be big inside, to front Jamie, and my teammates defended the back," Akana said. "We had a lot more communication this time. It was fun."

Tami Konishi, who shot 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, led Iolani with 11 points. Smith, who fouled out in the fourth quarter, finished with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

"That was one of our objectives," Cockett said. "As long as she's on the bench, we have a good chance."

Trailing by 13 in the third quarter, Iolani pulled to within eight, but Smith left the game early in the fourth after committing her fourth personal foul.

After Kamehameha extended the lead to 10, Smith returned to energize the Raiders for a final run. Konishi hit another 24-foot trey and Smith knocked in a 12-foot bank shot to help Iolani pull to within 39-34 with 4:33 left.

Wong then scored the next three points for the Warriors, including a bucket off a steal, and they led 42-34 with 2:21 to go.

Smith hit a follow shot with 1:59 left to bring the Raiders within six, but fouled out seconds later on a reach-in at midcourt.

Kamehameha shot 9-for-12 from the line to close out the win.
