McLachlin heads defensive team
When the Star-Bulletin boys basketball Fab 15 All-State selections were released on Sunday, the views and opinions of coaches and media were reflected clearly.
The same panel also participated in the All-Defensive team picks, and Punahou center Spencer McLachlin was a runaway winner as the top defender. The 6-foot-7 senior was joined by Tyler Caswell of Kalaheo, who garnered the second-highest point total.
Also on the team are Brandon Madamba, Beau Albrechtson and Keone Reyes of Kaimuki. Moanalua guard Stevie Austin was also voted to the top five, finishing in a tie with Reyes.
St. Francis girls to sign letters
Four St. Francis athletes will sign college letters of intent tomorrow at the school's campus.
Troubadours volleyball player Kylie Harrington will sign to play for Nevada
Two softball players -- Sasha Koki and Jandee Taira -- will sign to play for Western Oregon, while teammate Shannon Lum will sign to play for Southern Utah.
Kuehu twins help in other ways
Punahou twins
Shawna-Lei Kuehu and
Shaena-Lyn Kuehu are sidelined with knee injuries, but that doesn't mean they're not effective in other ways for the two-time defending state girls basketball champion.
Shawna-Lei, the two-time state player of the year, isn't shy about offering her insights to teammates.
"Yep, the girls really look up to Shawna," coach Mike Taylor said. "She was giving great feedback to them that night and against Maryknoll. She saw some great things that she was relaying to the kids and me."
Shaena-Lyn, an All-State guard and standout defensive player, injured her knee earlier than her sister.
"Ideally, she'd love to return for this season, but we need to grab a hold of the big picture, which is being ready for next season and for her college career. If she can return for the summer tournaments and is 100 percent healthy, not only physically, but emotionally as well, that would be her goal," the coach said.
