Viena Lota’s effort leads No. 6 Kamehameha over No. 2 Punahou in overtime
A little luck never hurt, but Analee Viena Lota made the difference with some hustle.
The senior made a follow shot with 10 seconds left to give No. 6 Kamehameha a 55-54 overtime win over second-ranked Punahou last night.
Kamehameha improved to 3-1 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (11-1 overall). Viena Lota, a 5-foot-10 guard, finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds. She also had four of her team's 12 steals.
Viena Lota's putback broke a 53-all tie. On the ensuing play, Punahou guard Janelle Nomura beat the pressure defense upcourt and was fouled by Kylle Roy with 2.4 seconds left. Despite injuring her left knee on the play, she swished the first free throw.
"My knee was shaking. It was weak," Nomura said. Her second try rattled in and out, and Roy rebounded as time expired.
Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett was far from satisfied despite the win.
"With all our turnovers, all the chances we threw away, we weren't patient," he said, referring to his team's 21 turnovers. "They missed a free throw. We got lucky."
Rhani Kaneaiakala added 12 points and six rebounds, and guard Lindsey Wong tallied 10 points.
The Warriors' win overshadowed a breakout game for Nomura, who scored a career-high 25 points. Punahou slipped to 2-2 in league play (11-3 overall) after shooting 50 percent (15-for-30) from the foul line.
Punahou coach Mike Taylor believes his young team is taking steps forward. "I'm extremely proud of their effort. We have the competitive fire now," he said.
Kamehameha limited the visitors to 31 percent shooting (17-for-54) and outrebounded the Buffanblu 36-29. The Warriors shot 17-for-48 from the field (35 percent).
