Kamehameha romps
Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett felt his team hadn't prepared well at all for its first game coming off of a two-week spring break. Mid-Pacific coach Byron Cheng, on the other hand, felt good about his team's preparation for the No. 6 Warriors.
But it was Kamehameha that ran away with a 54-20 one-sided Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball victory at the Owls' gym.
Bingo numbers shouted out during timeouts and halftime at Mid-Pacific's gym didn't help the Owls line up much offensively against the visitors.
"Not (pleased) because of the score, (but) because of how we played," said Cockett. "The score doesn't mean anything. We came off the worst two days of practice. Our objective today was to be a lot more aggressive."
The Warriors' fullcourt pressure and 10-person platoon -- combined with a bevy of Mid-Pacific turnovers -- were all factors in the Owls (1-3 ILH) getting blanked on the scoreboard in both the second and fourth quarters.
Mid-Pacific seemed to lose some confidence after failing to score in the second period, becoming hesitant on jumpshots and opportunities to put the ball in the paint in the second half.
Analee Viena Lota led the Warriors (10-1, 2-1) with 12 points. Cockett emptied his bench during the last minutes of the game. Kamehameha's lone loss so far this season came against top-ranked Iolani.
The Owls, with seven available players, kept things competitive in the first quarter. Paige Young hit two free throws with 2 seconds left to pull her team within 19-14 after one.
That's when disaster struck. Nothing seemed to go right offensively in the second, but Cheng told his team afterward to stay positive when it noticeably lost a step.
"We were a little concerned (with confidence) and one of our goals tonight was 'no fear,' " Cheng said. "Shoot with confidence, and the first quarter we're OK. Second quarter came around, and it just felt like we were overwhelmed."
