Pearl City applies pressure to beat Nanakuli
Pearl City didn't pass up a chance to move up the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West Division standings at the expense of its opposition, pulling away at Nanakuli 44-32 last night.
Jazmin Pahukoa-Malia scored 14 points to lead the Lady Chargers, Ariel Komomua came off the bench to add 10 and Desiree Luis chipped in seven.
Pearl City (4-2) went with full-court pressure most of the game and forced 31 turnovers while giving up the ball only 17 times to break a tie in the standings with the Golden Hawks (3-3) with half the OIA season played.
Sasha Montez led Nanakuli with 11 points before fouling out with 2:07 to play.
Pahukoa-Malia returned to the basketball team this year after sitting out last season to focus on volleyball.
"It's really good (this year) -- we all blend and work well together," the senior said. "People I played with (as a sophomore) were older, so it was harder (then)."
Chargers coach Michael Morton agreed.
"This team is really unselfish. They're working for each other," he said, adding that his team responded to his challenge of applying pressure on the ball the length of the court.
Leading 39-30 with 5:23 to play, Morton called for time and told his team to slow things down.
The Lady Chargers took the air out of the ball, swinging it from side to side. Meanwhile, when the Golden Hawks attacked, their haste forced them into more turnovers. They managed just a basket from Malie Moe in the final period.
Nanakuli's best chance at a comeback vanished with Montez's fifth foul with 2 minutes left.
Pearl City went on a 9-2 run to extend to a 10-point lead on Pahukoa-Malia's putback with 2:15 to go in the third quarter, forcing Nanakuli coach Eric Nakabayashi to call a timeout.
"Tonight our ball-handling was erratic," Nakabayashi said. "When we come in real focused to play, we don't look like this. Somebody will make a run on us and we get out of whack."
