Rainbow Wahine conquer Spartans
No. 21 Hawaii used a five-run sixth inning to defeat Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose State 9-2 in the rubber game of a three-game softball series.
Rainbow Wahine (35-8, 8-1 WAC) starting pitcher Kate Robinson and Tyleen Tausaga both hit home runs, while Alana Power collected two doubles. For Robinson, her home run marked the 14th this season, and currently ranks as the third-highest single-season total in program history. Tausaga's blast was her 10th on the season, and 28th as a Rainbow Wahine.
Jessica Morton (8-1, 2-0 WAC) picked up the win in relief of Robinson.
Vulcans advance, but lose in semis
Hawaii-Hilo fell to Cal State Stanislaus 4-1 in the semifinal round of the Tournament of Champions softball tournament at Pedretti Park in Turlock, Calif., yesterday afternoon.
The Vulcans' Miki Asamura collected two hits and drove in the squad's lone run. Starter Sarah Weisskopf was saddled with the loss after giving up seven hits and walking four.
Hilo (35-8) advanced to the semifinals after defeating Chico State (12-24) earlier in the day, 3-1.
Designated hitter Leo Sing Chow went 2-3 with two RBIs, and starter Tracy Ryan earned the complete-game victory.
