Tanaka wrote this novel with the intention of telling his tale which revolved around the disappearance of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the late 19th century.

Anthony Fredrick's story is based on the infamous 1946 tsunami that struck Hilo, Hawaii. The Tsunami Quilt featured in the story was created by Laupahoehoe students in 1997 to commemorate the lives lost in the tragic event. Fredrick's tale is about a boy named Kimo and his attempts to learn about the disaster.
