Gatorade honors for Kuehu

Punahou's Shawna-Lei Kuehu was named as the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Basketball Player of the Year yesterday.
Kuehu, however, hasn't stepped on the court for any of the Buffanblu's games so far this year because she suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in December. She's likely to miss the whole season.
Kuehu is one of 51 Gatorade players of the year chosen from the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Hawaii is the only state that runs its girls basketball season in the spring, and that results in the Gatorade honor being based on a candidates' previous scholastic season and fall club season, according to the release.
Kuehu, a 5-foot-10 junior guard, was the Star-Bulletin's player of the year last year when she led the Buffanblu to the state championship and averaged 19.8 points, 11 rebounds and 3.5 steals.
