17 Pa‘i Awards recognize Star-Bulletin staff

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin received 17 Pa'i Awards for excellence yesterday at the annual Hawaii Publishers Association luncheon.

First-place awards went to photographers Dennis Oda and Jamm Aquino in the feature and spot news categories. Oda won for a feature photo of a man carrying an outrigger canoe into the water near Lanikai. Aquino won for a photo of the University Lab School fire.

The Star-Bulletin won three other first-place awards for excellence in design, illustration and informational graphics.

The Honolulu Advertiser got 16 editorial awards, and the paper's Custom Publishing Group swept the program booklet category for a total of 19 awards. The Advertiser newsroom took eight first-place awards, and the Custom Publishing Group got one first-place finish.

Hana Hou, the Hawaiian Airlines in-flight magazine, garnered nine awards, the most of any magazine publication.

MidWeek, the Star-Bulletin's sister publication, got a second-place award for non-daily newspaper excellence.
