Star-Bulletin staff
The state Department of Health will offer suicide prevention training statewide beginning today on the Big Island.
The sessions, titled Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, will be conducted with the help of the Suicide Prevention Task Force and the Hawaii Suicide Prevention Education Awareness Research Foundation.
The two-day workshops will prepare people to recognize and assess the risk of someone in crisis and provide suicide prevention information. The training is geared toward those who might be in contact with suicidal individuals.
Suicide is the leading cause of injury death in Hawaii. Each year, 128 people commit suicide in Hawaii, and 870 others are hospitalized for trying to kill themselves.
Workshops will be held on the Big Island today, tomorrow and May 17-18; April 3-4 on Kauai; April 9-10 on Maui; and June 27-28 on Oahu.
For registration and cost information on the sessions, call 734-9256 or the Health Department at 586-5939.
