TV pitchman now a rassler
YOU MIGHT know
Daryl Bonilla from his role in the 1998 independent film "Beyond Paradise," but it's much more likely that you recognize his famous catch phrase, "That's my bank!"
Although Bank of Hawaii has retired that ad campaign, Bonilla is still stopped by local residents who recognize him from the television commercials. Later this week, he'll give Honolulu a taste of his other passion, professional wrestling.
"Dangerous" Daryl Bonilla (aka "DDB") has been part of Hawaii's fledgling indie scene for about a decade, getting his start in 1997 as an announcer under the tutelage of the legendary Lars Anderson. He first wrestled in 2000 and is now part of the Action Zone Wrestling promotion, where he currently holds the tag team championship with AkuA.
"I think wrestling combines the two things I enjoy the most: sports and entertainment," Bonilla said. "And it keeps me in shape!"
Five matches have been announced for Thursday's AZW event, "Revenge and Retribution," which starts at 8 p.m. at the Waipahu Fil-Com Center. DDB and AkuA will defend their belts against Devilshock, while AZW heavyweight champ The Rage takes on King Makoa. Cheap Heat, Mark Anarchy and Pure Luck are also scheduled to perform. Admission is $10.
If you can't make it on Thursday or just want to get a taste of what AZW has to offer, check out the promotion's weekly TV show at 9 p.m. today on 'Olelo 52 ...
