Kailua takes 1 from McKinley
Corey Ishigo has taken an old-school approach to coaching his Kailua baseball squad: play solid defense, and find a way to churn out enough runs to win.
That strategy worked to perfection as the Surfriders downed McKinley 6-2 yesterday afternoon in an Oahu Interscholastic Association game at McKinley High School. Kailua manufactured runs by drawing five walks to supplement seven hits and stealing six bases. Four of its runs scored as a result of men reaching base via free pass or one of four Tiger errors.
"We've got to play as a team; we don't have any superstars," said Ishigo. "We don't rely on the long ball, so we've got to do whatever we can to scrap for runs."
The Surfriders (2-0 OIA) got on the board early with three runs in the second frame. Designated hitter Keenan Tanaka led off the inning with an inside-the-park home run, which he spanked over right fielder Kaimana Balanon's head. Tanaka made it home as the ball rolled deep into the outfield. Rob DeMarsh and freshman Jared Iha reached on an error and walk, respectively, and both moved into scoring position with stolen bases. DeMarsh came plateward on one of McKinley starting pitcher Roger Kraemer's three wild pitches, and Iha scored on Kailua starter Kili Vierra's ground out.
Despite walking four batters and hitting another, Vierra racked up five strikeouts and scattered six hits on 97 pitches for the Surfriders.
"Kili settled down in the end -- he was walking a lot of guys earlier in the game," Ishigo said. "He put a lot of pressure on himself by trying to strike out guys instead of letting our defense work. That's our team philosophy: let our defense play. He settled down after a while and found a groove.
"It might have been his first start of the regular season as a senior, and hopefully that was the problem."
