WARRIOR VOLLEYBALL
Hawaii grounds Lewis for third straight win
And they thought climbing Diamond Head on Thursday was a tall order.
For Lewis, it was Hawaii's serving that had the Flyers catching their collective breath.
Next Up vs. Lewis tonight
|
Led by Lauri Hakala's school-record eight aces, the Warriors served Lewis off the Stan Sheriff Center court last night, 30-18, 30-26, 30-23. Hawaii needed just 90 minutes to win its third in a row -- a first for this season -- and improve to 6-13 in front of 1,675 (3,114 tickets).
The Flyers dropped to 14-8 heading into tonight's 7 o'clock rematch.
"I don't know what to tell you," said Hakala, who added 10 kills and was in on three of Hawaii's 10.5 blocks. "I felt pretty focused, only had two (serving) errors.
"Once you get that first serve in, you get more confidence. And coming back from the injury (abdominal strain), I've been able to serve harder and harder. Sometimes things like this happen."
With the eight aces, Hakala nearly doubled his season total. He came into the match with nine. More impressively, the record was set during his first four times from the serving line, where he had eight aces in his first 13 serves.
Equally efficient for the Warriors was the production from their middles. Senior Dio Dante had seven kills in nine attempts and freshman Matt Rawson added five kills with no errors in 10 swings. The two also had five blocks each.
Freshman left-side hitter Matt Vanzant had a team-high 11 kills for UH. Leading Lewis were Jared Dayton with 11 kills and Drew Pickering with 10.
"I thought we played a little tentative to start," Lewis coach Dan Friend said. "We blocked OK, matched their 10.5. I think the team learned a lot. They're young and hadn't been in this kind of atmosphere.
"And I think Hawaii is getting in a groove after those wins over (Cal State) Northridge."
Adding to the Flyers' troubles was the revolving door of a Hawaii lineup. The Warriors used 11 players, including former Lewis recruit Sean Carney on the outside in Game 2. Carney also set Game 3.
"It was fun to play different positions, once I figured out what I was doing," said Carney, who matched his career high with two kills. "I'm sure it was more fun for the people on the bench watching me, because I think I take two steps (on the approach) to every step I'm supposed to take."
It was the first time this season that Warrior coach Mike Wilton made lineup changes that were not out of necessity.
"It was nice that we got to play some guys and it was not an attrition deal," he said. "It was to give them opportunities."
The Flyers took advantage of the Warriors' mixed-plate lineup in Game 3, coming up with six of their 10.5 blocks, in staying close. Lewis pulled to within one several times, the last at 24-23. Pickering's service error started off what would be Hawaii's 6-0 run to close it out.
Notes: Sophomore hitter Mark Ribeiro confirmed that he has left the team and will be transferring. He played in two matches this season ... Junior middle Kyle Klinger is taking a leave of absence from the team, Wilton said. It's uncertain if Klinger will return this season or next.
