APSE judges vote Simpson No. 1
Kalani Simpson won the sports column writing category and Dave Reardon finished in a tie for third in breaking news for his story on the Pro Bowl possibly moving to China as the final judging results were revealed yesterday in the 2006 Associated Press Sports Editor contest.
It was announced on Feb. 28 that the Star-Bulletin -- competing in its APSE-contest division of about 100 newspapers with circulation of 40,000-100,000 -- won four awards, including the individual honors for Simpson and Reardon. The sports section also finished in the top 10 in the special section category and earned an honorable mention for daily sections.
It was the fourth consecutive year the Star-Bulletin earned a top-10 award for a UH season-preview magazine in the special sections category. The newspaper won in 2003 for the comic book H-man magazine, in 2004 for the QB magazine, in 2005 for the Volleyball Insider preview and last year for the combined volleyball-football preview.
