Offense no problem for Cougars
Kaiser rolls to shutout Mustangs
Offense was the concern for a young Kaiser squad heading into yesterday's Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division opener against Kalaheo, but the host Cougars needed just five innings to shut out Kalaheo 17-0.
Twelve different players crossed the plate for Kaiser, which also got a great performance from senior starting pitcher Toby Inouye.
Inouye struck out 10 of the 18 batters he faced in the game and gave up just three hits while walking one.
"He threw in pretty much all of our critical games last season and is one of the few guys we have back from last year," assistant coach Vince Bedoya said.
Bedoya coached the Cougars yesterday while head coach Peter Ho was away on the mainland. The Cougars lost eight senior starters and five OIA All-Stars from last year's team to graduation.
Yesterday's game was also the regular-season debut for first-year Kalaheo coach Tim Lierman.
Kaiser coach Peter Ho's biggest worry heading into the regular season was whether or not his team would be able to score enough runs to stay in ballgames.
A young Cougars squad seemed to take those concerns personally, putting 17 runs on the board in just four innings as host Kaiser opened the Oahu Interscholastic Association regular season with a 17-0 shellacking of Kalaheo yesterday in an Eastern Division game that lasted only five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Dustin Dela Pena had three hits and four RBIs and brother Devon Dela Pena scored three times for the Cougars (1-0), who scored in every inning.

"We rarely score that many runs, but we got off to a good start and did a great job of executing at the plate," assistant coach Vince Bedoya said.
Bedoya was in charge of the team yesterday, as Ho is on the mainland. Ho will be back for Kaiser's next game, Saturday at Kaimuki.
Almost lost in the offensive explosion for Kaiser was the pitching of ace Toby Inouye, who gave up just three hits in five innings while striking out 10, including the last five batters of the game. The bottom four batters in Kalaheo's lineup combined to go 0-for-8 with seven strikeouts as Inouye kept them off balance by mixing in a devastating curveball with his fastball and changeup.
"All of my pitches were working and I was hitting my spots," Inouye said.
It wasn't the regular-season debut first-year Kalaheo head coach Tim Lierman envisioned, as senior starter Talon Wemple struggled with his command, walking six batters in just over two innings. As Lierman made a pitching change in the bottom of the third inning, he was ejected by the home-plate umpire after arguing balls and strikes.
Donovan Correa replaced Wemple, but surrendered a two-run single to Dustin Dela Pena and an RBI double to Calvin Tashiro as the Cougars took an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, where they really poured it on. They sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning and scored nine times. Pinch hitter Mychael Nagata's two-run triple off the wall in left-center highlighted the inning.
"We're a young team, but we have a lot of talent and it's just a matter of getting them some experience on the field," Bedoya said. "This was good to help prepare our kids for some tough games down the road."
