UH cornerback Jones arrested
University of Hawaii football player Keenan Jones was arrested and "behind bars" yesterday, according to a report on KITV (Ch. 6).
A police report said Jones was arrested Tuesday for felony abuse of a household member and kidnapping after a disturbance at his university-area residence, according to the television report.
Jones had been suspended from the UH football team earlier in the day for repeatedly breaking team rules. The cornerback was to be held out of spring practice, which starts April 2.
UH coach June Jones was not immediately available for comment, and UH spokeswoman Lois Manin declined to make a statement after being made aware of the report last night.
Jones, a junior-college transfer from Los Angeles, was on the Warriors' roster but did not play last season.
Leaheys' radio gig starts April 16
The "Leahey and Leahey" radio show debuts April 16 on KUMU (1500 AM) after renovations to the KUMU studio are completed.
As reported in Saturday's Star-Bulletin, the show will air Mondays and Fridays from 6 to 9 a.m.
The hosts are Jim Leahey, the longtime TV voice of University of Hawaii sports, and his son Kanoa Leahey, who is sports director at KHON-TV (Ch. 3). The Leaheys also have a weekly TV show on KHET-TV (Ch. 10), Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.
KUMU general manager John Aeto said the radio show's format will be 75 percent sports and 25 percent other local issues.
Rainbow Wahine rise in softball polls
The Hawaii softball team jumped two places to No. 21 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll released yesterday.
The Rainbow Wahine (30-7, 3-0 Western Athletic Conference) also moved up to No. 23 in this week's ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
UH takes a six-game winning streak into its WAC series with Louisiana Tech (16-14) this weekend at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Tomorrow's single game starts at 6 p.m. and Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
UH water polo holds steady
The Hawaii women's water polo team remained at No. 8 in the National Collegiate Top 20 poll released yesterday.
The Rainbow Wahine are 10-8 overall, and fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings at 6-3.
Hawaii next hosts No. 4 California in a 4 p.m. contest March 31 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. The Wahine then travel for the MPSF matches at UC Santa Barbara April 10 and Cal State Northridge April 12.
Local swimmers honored
Erin Nakamoto (Kalani '03) and Chris Ricketts (Mid-Pacific '04), swimmers at Lindenwood University, have been named 2007 NAIA/Daktronics Scholar Athletes. Nakamoto, a senior, is an accounting major. Ricketts, in his junior year, is majoring in criminal justice.
Nakamoto and Jon Lau (Iolani '04), a junior at Lindenwood, received the "NAIA Champions of Character" award at the banquet preceding the NAIA Championships.
UH seventh in Thompson Invitational
The University of Hawaii women's golf team placed seventh at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational yesterday at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
The Rainbow Wahine finished with a three-round total of 935. Dale Gammie led UH at 77-73-76--226, good for a tie for sixth place. Xyra Suyetsugu (235) was 28th and Lisa Kajihara (237) placed 30th.
Texas A&M's final round of 295 gave the Aggies the tournament title, followed by Arizona and Brigham Young. Texas A&M's Danielle McVeigh birdied the first hole of a playoff with UTEP's Gerina Mendoza to claim individual medalist honors.
Arizona's Amanda Wilson (Waiakea '05) placed fifth at 223.
» Whitney Ueno (Hilo '05) and Emily Lau (Iolani '03) shared the Northwest Conference women's golfer of the week honors after finishing as co-medalists in the Willamette Invitational on Sunday.
Ueno, a sophomore at Willamette, shot a 72-83--155. Lau, a senior at Puget Sound fired a 79-76--155.
Jasmine Ching (Waiakea '06), a freshman at Pacific, was an honorable mention selection after shooting 86-86--172 to tie for sixth place.
Lauren Yoshimura (Pearl City '05), a sophomore at Pacific, tied for 21st place at 101-93--194.
» The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's golf team topped Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade in a three-team match yesterday at the Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course. Led by Abel Soares' 3-over 75, the Seasiders carded a team score of 309, followed by HPU at 319 and Chaminade at 348.
No. 27 Washington beats 'Bows
Hawaii began a stretch of four consecutive matchups with nationally ranked men's tennis opponents last night with a 5-2 loss to No. 27 Washington at the UH Tennis Complex.
UW swept doubles play and prevailed in four singles matches. UH got wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles -- Andreas Weber was a 7-6 (4), 6-4 winner and Sascha Heinemann prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (4).
UH hosts the Aloha Invitational tomorrow through Tuesday, featuring California, Pepperdine and San Diego State. The 'Bows open the tournament tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Cal, the defending national champion.
Bradley nips Vulcans in ninth
Bradley had one more hit and one more run, overtaking Hawaii-Hilo in the 10th inning last night in a 3-2 Vulcans loss at Francis Wong Stadium.
Karl Maas took the loss for UH-Hilo, surrendering the winning run in the ninth. Brad Altbach pitched a scoreless final 1 1/3 innings for the win. Dayne Ogawa had two hits for UH-Hilo. The series ends with a 3 p.m. game today.
