Battle ready
Learn to make traditional Hawaiian weapons in classes offered at Windward Community College, April 9 to May 9.
Gordon 'Umialiloalahanauokalahaua Kai explains the uses of ancient weapons and shows students how to create pieces for their own collections, including spears, canes, swords, daggers and clubs.
Cost is $200 for wood and use of tools and an additional $50 for additional materials. Call 956-8400 to register.

Need some wheels? Island Triathlon & Bike hosts the ITB CycleSwap, 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark's church, 539 Kapahulu Ave.
Think of it as a giant garage sale for bikes and paraphernalia such as clothing, components and accessories.
The sale is a benefit for the Hawaii Bicycling League and K-VIBE, a Kalihi Valley program that promotes kids' health through biking.
Admission is $5. For sellers, a half-table of space is $10. Sell a bike for $5. Call 732-7227.

Abigail Friedman, the U.S. consul general in Quebec City, has discovered a connection between the Japanese poetic form and her work as a diplomat.
Friedman speaks on "Haiku and the Art of Diplomacy" at a lunchtime session hosted by the Japan-America Society of Hawaii, at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the American Savings Band Tower, 1101 Bishop St., eighth floor.
