Braves sweep Vulcans in doubleheader
Bradley picked up road wins of 19-10 and 7-6 in a baseball doubleheader yesterday to sweep a three-game series from Hawaii-Hilo. The Braves evened their record at 7-7, and the Vulcans fell to 5-20.
Michael Christl earned the victory for Bradley in the first game despite allowing 8 runs on 10 hits. Hilo starter Joe Davis picked up the loss after allowing 7 runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Dan Brewer drove in four runs for Bradley, and Hilo second baseman Michael Higa led his squad at the plate with a triple and four RBIs.
Reliever Brad Jones earned his first victory of the year after giving up one run through 3 1/3 innings in the second game. Paul Rice notched the save by retiring the final two batters in the ninth inning. Vulcans reliever Karl Maas was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs in the game's final four innings.
Brewer continued his offensive show by smacking a home run and driving in two runs. In defeat, catcher Ryan Taiariol had two RBIs for Hilo.
Hawaii women defeat San Jose State
After splitting six singles matches with visiting San Jose State, the University of Hawaii women's tennis team won all three of its doubles matches en route to a 4-3 dual-match victory
The Rainbow Wahine (4-10) doubles teams of Florence Wasko and Chloe Bihag, Kana Aikawa and Sophie Kobuch, and Samantha Cappella and Julia Sandborn each notched doubles victories.
Kobuch, Bihag and Sandborn also collected singles victories.
The match was supposed to conclude on Saturday, but was suspended due to heavy rain at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine conclude their seven-match homestand with matches against Northwestern on Friday and California on Sunday.
» The UH men's team also earned a 4-3 win over Nevada as senior Chad Faulk defeated Eldar Dzhafarov 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the meet's decisive match. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 4-5 , and the Wolfpack fell to 6-8.
Rainbows sail to 15th place
The University of Hawaii coed sailing team scored 422 points to claim 15th place in the Truxton Umsted regatta over the weekend.
St. Mary's (Md.) won the 19-school meet, which was hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, with 212 points. The Warriors finished ahead of South Florida (458 points) and behind Eckerd (404).
Ryan Wild turned in the team's best finish with an eighth-place finish in the C division of the singlehanded racing portion of the regatta. Overall, the meet featured 36 races in four divisions.
