Kahuku rallies to victory
In a battle between experience and youth, Kahuku was able to use its leadership down the stretch to pull out a 48-44 comeback victory over the scrappy Kalaheo Mustangs.
"We have a great group of seniors, and their experience and leadership was the only thing that pulled us through against a good team," Kahuku head coach Peni Latu said.
The Red Raiders start five seniors to Kalaheo's two, but the Mustangs' young talent was led by senior Shanadee Canon, who was unstoppable the entire game. The 5-foot-8 forward showed why she is one of the top offensive talents in the state, scoring inside and outside, and getting into the lane and drawing fouls at will. Canon finished with 26 points.
Despite her play, Kahuku was able to stay within striking distance throughout the night. Guard Brittney Fesolai, plagued with foul trouble in the second half, led the Red Raiders with 12 points and was the floor general for the fourth-quarter comeback.
"Our defense sets the tone," Latu said. "I told the girls to just settle down because I knew that we would try to make a run."
Only down 36-32 entering the final quarter, Kahuku rattled off six straight points to take its first lead of the game since the opening minutes. Kalaheo was able to fight back thanks to strong interior play by Canon and sophomore Caira Pires, whose back-to-back layups regained the lead for the Mustangs with less than 2 minutes to play.
After a Fesolai free throw cut the Kalaheo lead to one, a costly Mustang turnover led to Kahuku's only 3-pointer of the game, a clutch shot from the left wing by senior guard LeNora Nauahi. Down by two with only seconds remaining, Kalaheo's inbounds pass was stolen by forward Keisha Moeai, who was then fouled. The Kahuku senior calmly iced the game by knocking down both free throws, giving her 11 points and the Red Raiders a huge win early in the OIA season.
"As long as we play within ourselves, we have the leadership and character to be contenders because our experience can carry us," Latu said.
However, there is one thing that worries the first-year varsity coach. A win against the perennial powerhouse means the Red Raiders have officially arrived, and with the impending notoriety will come expectations.
"We caught a good team early, but now it exposes us and we will not be under the radar," Latu said. "Hopefully, we will be able to respond because this game is a big confidence booster."
