McMackin in town to talk football
Greg McMackin, who helped Hawaii to a 9-4 record as defensive coordinator in June Jones' first year as UH football coach in 1999, interviewed yesterday for a job on the Warriors staff.
Jones said McMackin is not up for the defensive coordinator's opening, because Jones plans to fill the two open staff positions before deciding who the coordinator will be later.
"He is one of three people interviewing for an assistant coach's position," Jones said. "There is no defensive coordinator interviewing yet."
Assuming McMackin joins the staff, he would then likely become a candidate for the coordinator's position.
McMackin left UH after the 1999 season to be defensive coordinator at Texas Tech, and also was an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers.
The 1999 Hawaii defense went back-to-back games without allowing a touchdown, as UH won 20-0 at SMU and beat UTEP 33-3.
Jones has said recently that Warriors defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold would also be a candidate for defensive coordinator.
Meanwhile, UH assistant Mouse Davis was officially announced as offensive coordinator at Portland State. He joins Jerry Glanville, the new PSU head coach, who was defensive coordinator at Hawaii the past two seasons.
"I told Jerry we'll run a draw play every now and then. We're ready to crank it up here," said Davis, who was formerly head coach at Portland State, including while Jones was the Vikings' record-setting quarterback.
Davis quashed speculation that Reinebold would leave UH for the title of defensive coordinator at Portland State.
"I think he's pretty much locked in (at Hawaii)," Davis said of Reinebold.
Dennis McKnight, who served as a graduate assistant last season, is expected to fill one of the vacancies created by Glanville and Davis, as offensive line coach.
