Bittersweet gold for Akamine
Iolani's Keiko Akamine, a runner-up last year, dominated Konawaena's Alexandra Aoki in the final of the 103-pound class in the Chevron/HHSAA Girls State Wrestling Championships last Saturday.
Moments later, her joy was neutralized when Raiders senior captain Carla Watase was upset by Farrington's Samantha Batoon in the 108 final.
"It was so heartbreaking. She worked so hard on everything," said Akamine. "We just let her get it (crying) all out. There's not much you can say."
In the meantime, teammate Megan Morisada had been warming up. It was only when she went to the mat for the 114 final that she learned what had happened.
"It got her pumped for her next match," Akamine said. "She does good when she's mad."
Morisada shut out Kapolei's Chaelyn Tan 5-0.
Watase will continue her career at the next level, perhaps at Pacific University (Ore.).
Akamine and Morisada will be back next season. Akamine is a sophomore, and Morisada is a junior.
Another injury
Kamehameha point guard
Johanna Sai suffered a knee injury recently, adding to the total of fallen standouts in Interscholastic League Honolulu girls basketball.
Last fall, Punahou's talented twins, Shaena-Lyn Kuehu and Shawna-Lei Kuehu, suffered ACL injuries.
Funky schedule
Because Iolani will depart for a four-game California trip during spring break (starting March 19), the ILH bumped up some baseball games.
The Raiders opened yesterday at home against Kamehameha and play against Saint Louis on Friday at Ala Wai Field.
The Raiders conclude their busy week with a game at Mid-Pacific on Saturday.
Other teams will see action a week from today. Pac-Five visits Iolani, Punahou meets Kamehameha at Ala Wai, and Saint Louis battles Mid-Pacific at Central Oahu Regional Park.

She edged Olivia Fatongia of Iolani 4-3 to win the 220-pound class, her fourth state championship.
