Wahine take Eagles over the wall
Kate Robinson and Brandi Peiler hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead Hawaii to a 5-1 win last night over Boston College at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Justine Smethurst (6-3) scattered eight hits, walking two and striking out six in a complete-game victory. Robinson finished 3-for-4, including the three-run homer.
Hawaii improved to 17-5, while the Eagles dropped to 1-2. Both teams will compete in the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament that starts tomorrow.
Also in the field are Pacific, Liberty and Oregon State. The tournament continues through Sunday's 2 p.m. championship.
Aloha Section PGA losing leader
Paul Sugimoto announced his retirement from the Aloha Section PGA yesterday, giving up a job he has held since 1996.
Sugimoto will officially step down as executive director on June 30. He was originally hired as communications director in 1991 and was promoted to the top post five years later.
The Aloha Section PGA is currently looking for a new executive director and hopes to have someone in that spot this summer.
Sugimoto is credited with establishing the Aloha Section PGA Foundation, which allows the organization to contribute to programs like Hawaii junior golf and the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame.
Mowers sparks Hawaii-Hilo to victory
Robby Mowers drove in four runs on two hits, both doubles, to spark host Hawaii-Hilo to a 9-4 win over Chicago State last night.
The victory was only the Vulcans' second in 18 games.
David Chu had two hits and an RBI for the Vulcans. Michael Higa, Peter Rodgers, Dayne Ogawa and Shane Kessel all drove in a run.
Dustin Gilmore pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, giving up just two hits and two runs -- one unearned -- to get the victory.
Chicago State was led by Jonathan Wilson, who went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Kalakau, Plunkett shine for HPU
Nicole Kalakau and Krystal Plunkett were the driving force behind Hawaii Pacific's doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame de Namur yesterday.
In the first game, Kalakau drove in three runs on two hits and Plunkett added two RBIs as the Sea Warriors thumped the Argonauts 9-1.
In the nightcap, Kalakau had four RBIs on two hits, including a homer, as HPU won 8-4.
The Warriors improved to 9-1 overall, while Notre Dame de Namur fell to 7-24.
Irons eliminated from Quiksilver Pro
Kauai's Bruce Irons lost to Joel Parkinson in the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro in Australia yesterday, forcing him out of the tournament in a tie for ninth place.
Parkinson outscored Irons 19.1 to 7.83 after Irons was hung with an interference penalty late in the heat and limited to only one ride. Pancho Sullivan finished in tied for 17th to lead the other Hawaii surfers, followed by Andy Irons and Fred Patacchia tied for 33rd.
Australia's Mick Fanning won the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour event at Snapper Rocks.
Iolani graduate Pape honored
Kyle Pape (Iolani '05), a sophomore at the Colorado School of Mines, has been named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division Second Team.
The 6-foot-2 guard led the 14-13 Orediggers in scoring with a 13.7 average, assists with 82 and steals with 26.
Pape was the 2005-06 RMAC Freshman of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-East Division pick last season.
