RAINBOW BASEBALL
Hawaii routs CSU 20-1
The 'Bows score 13 runs in the seventh to pull away

Next Up vs. Chicago State tonight

Why not? The Chicago State bullpen was a disaster area.
UH -- with backup players doing most of the damage -- scored 13 runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 20-1 rout of CSU last night as a gathering of 481 endured what started out as a fairly decent game, but devolved into something resembling a slow-pitch softball mismatch.
Hawaii snapped a three-game losing streak; it was swept last week by Wichita State, a team on the other end of the college baseball spectrum from Chicago State.
It was the most runs for Hawaii since a 34-11 win at Air Force in 1999.
The Rainbows (10-6) sent 19 batters to the plate in the seventh against four pitchers, and the Cougars (0-7) walked eight of them and hit one. Backup third baseman Vinnie Catricala unloaded with a bases-loaded triple, one of six UH hits in the inning. Matt Roquemore, another sub, hit two singles, driving in a run each time.
"That was the positive, every position player got into the game," UH coach Mike Trapasso said after the Rainbows collected a season-high 18 hits and all 16 batters got on at least once and either scored or drove in at least one run.
"A lot of our relievers are freshmen or new to this level," said Chicago state starter Chris Freshour, a Mid-Pacific graduate. "It's hard, especially when we've been inside all year."
Ian Harrington (3-3) went seven innings for the win, allowing just one unearned run and six hits. Cory Kahn finished up with two scoreless innings in his UH debut.
UH jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Jon Hee hit a clean single up the middle against his former Mid-Pacific Institute teammate, Freshour (0-2). Brandon Haislet hit a two-out, bloop double into center to score Hee.
"(Hee) got the better of me, but it was exciting," Freshour said
Freshour, with command of his curveball, limited UH to two runs in the first four innings. He struck out the side in the second and fourth innings and fanned seven in five innings.
"My curve was keeping some of them a little off-balance early in the game," Freshour said.
Said Trapasso: "It's like my old coach, Gary Ward said. The guys over 90 (mph) and under 80 are the hardest to hit. The first four innings were not exactly what we would want."
But the Rainbows eventually adjusted.
Haislet doubled again in the third, scoring Derek DuPree, who singled to start the inning and later stole third.
Hee's stand-up triple in the fifth highlighted a two-run inning. Justin Frash drove him in with a single and scored on Kris Sanchez's double.
Chicago State closed it to 4-1 with an unearned run in the sixth. Thomas Creal reached first when Harrington dropped a grounder, was moved to second on Simeon Morgan's sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Jonathan Wilson.
Jorge Franco and Haislet singled in runs and Hee drove in another with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and UH took a 7-1 lead, chasing Freshour in the process.
Cameron Wheeler was scheduled to make his first career start for Hawaii in tonight's 6:35 p.m. game against Chicago State's Sean Murphy.
The five-game series continues with a doubleheader tomorrow (second game seven innings) and a single game Sunday.
Chris Goya, another Mid-Pac alumnus, played left field for CSU and went 0-for-2 with a walk.
"We've just got to come back tomorrow, work harder," Goya said.
