UH sailing team places last in South Carolina
The 18th-ranked University of Hawaii coed sailing team finished last in the eight-team Bob Bavier race at Mount Pleasant, S.C., yesterday.
Hawaii managed just three wins in 21 races (over Eckard College twice and the Coast Guard Academy once), while host College of Charleston claimed first with a 19-2 mark.
Hawaii water polo team drops 2 matches
The fourth-ranked University of Hawaii women's water polo team lost to both host UC Irvine and UC Davis yesterday in the final day of the Irvine Invitational at the Anteater Aquatic Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine (8-7) fell to the Anteaters 9-3 and lost 16-11 to the Aggies in the seventh place game afterward.
UH All-American goalkeeper Meike De Nooy did not play in either match.
Vulcans take pair from Silverswords
The University of Hawaii-Hilo softball team claimed both games of a doubleheader against Chaminade yesterday, 4-2 and 10-1, at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday.
Vulcans shortstop Charity Senas hit a combined 4-for-9 with three RBIs, while Leo Sing Chow (3-1) pitched a two-hitter to win the opener and Tracy Ryan (5-0) threw five-hitter against the Silverswords in the nightcap.
UHH (14-2) was led by Miki Asamura's 3-for-4 performance in the second game.
Hawaii-Hilo tennis aces Chaminade
The University of Hawaii-Hilo women's tennis team defeated visiting Chaminade twice over the weekend, 9-0 and 8-1.
The Vulcans (4-6, 2-4 Pacific West Conference) earned their first league wins of the season.
Carll tops Hilo Invitational golf tournament
Kevin Carll fired a 6-under 65 in the final round of the 10th Hilo Invitational Pro Am and Golf Tournament yesterday to win by a stroke at 6-under 136.
Low amateur Pono Calip, 16, and Joe Phengsavath tied for second at 5-under 137.
Carll, the head golf professional at Turtle Bay Resort, shot an even-par 71 on Saturday, but finished strong yesterday despite a three-putt for bogey on the final hole.
Houston, Silva at USA Volleyball tryout
Hawaii sophomore hitter Jamie Houston and libero Kahealani Silva, who played for Hawaii-Hilo and was a walk-on one season for UH, were among the 110 athletes who participated in the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team tryouts that concluded yesterday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The tryouts were to identify prospective players for the U.S. women's national, A2 and junior national teams. Roster selections will be announced later.
