Watase, Nohara get No. 4
There is unity, and then there is legend.
For unity, the Iolani girls and Punahou boys captured team titles at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu wrestling championships last night.
For legend, Iolani's Carla Watase and Kamehameha's Randolyn "Hoku" Nohara added to their legacies.
Watase, a three-time state champion, took the 108-pound weight class to claim her fourth ILH individual crown.
Nohara, also a three-time winner at the state championships, captured her fourth ILH title, as well. The senior won the 220-pound division.
Iolani's girls won despite having no entries in two weight classes: 120 and 175. In addition to Watase, first place went to Keiko Akamine (103), Megan Morisada (114) and Lindsey Tufono (155). Four more Raiders placed second or third.
Watase blanked Tani Mashima of Kamehameha 10-0 in the final. The match began slowly and conservatively.
"I just keep working on my moves. If something opens up, I work it," said Watase, who is unbeaten in 10 ILH matches.
She has lost just two times in her career. Both happened last season.
"That motivated me to get better, to watch the video at home," she said, noting that her father, David, helps her analyze the footage.
The Raiders (142 points) squeezed past Kamehameha, which was just two points behind at 140. Punahou (104), Pac-Five (95) and Hawaii Baptist (28) rounded out the top five.
"Everything gears toward states," longtime Iolani coach Yoshi Honda said. "Seedings are the most important thing. Half the time championships are determined in the seeding meeting."
That meeting will be held today by the HHSAA committee.
Iolani's last ILH girls title came in 2005.
"This group's way different. It's an extremely talented group. We have great leadership with Carla," Honda said.
Punahou, meanwhile, led the boys' battle with 175 points and confirmed its status as one of the favorites for the state championship. Buffanblu individual champions are Reid Oshiro (119), Arnold Toriumi (125), Daniel Chow (140) and Josh Plechaty (145). Seven more Buffanblu placed second or third.
"We put in a lot of hard work for a lot of years. This is the best I've seen the team look," said Plechaty, who won the 103 state title as a freshman.
"I still think it's exciting for the kids, but they set their own goals, and their focus is more on next week," longtime coach Matt Oney said of the state championships.
All 14 Punahou wrestlers qualified for states. Kamehameha, which finished second with 154.5 points, qualified 12 wrestlers.
Kamehameha's girls team also placed second, but is certainly a threat to contend at the state championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at Blaisdell Arena.
Along with Nohara, individual champions for the Warriors are Macy Yonamine (98), Raena Campos (120) and Kiana Parilla (125).
Nohara fought off Iolani's Oliva Fatongia 4-0.
"I'm trying to use new moves, but we pretty much know each other's stuff," Nohara said. Nohara and Fatongia have faced off, she said, five or six times this season.
At this point, a fourth trip to states involves more preparation than ever because the bar is higher.
"It's more mental and physical, conditioning-wise. Mentally, I have a strong mind," Nohara said. "I'm more focused now."
