Federal and state officials will conduct an oil-spill response drill today and tomorrow at an unspecified location offshore from Oahu, Coast Guard officials said. The Coast Guard, state Health Department and the Clean Islands Council will take part in the largest oil-spill drill ever in U.S. waters. Observers from five other countries are expected. Drill participants will simulate the spreading of chemicals from helicopters and airplanes to disperse the spill.

SUV driver indicted in fatal '04 accident

The driver of a speeding sport utility vehicle was indicted by an Oahu grand jury on charges stemming from a crash on the Likelike Highway that killed three people headed to a wedding rehearsal.

Jonathan M. Fornua, of Los Angeles, was indicted yesterday on three counts of second-degree negligent homicide for allegedly causing the deaths of Joseph Naulu, 13; Mary Filimoehala, 18; and Winnie Naulu, 26, in the single-car crash on April 14, 2004.

The three were passengers in a Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Fornua that struck the sloped end of a barrier at the Honolulu-bound entrance to the Wilson Tunnel, launched into the air and crashed, flipping over at least once. Police said speed was a factor. The SUV was estimated to have been traveling about 70 to 80 mph.

Three others in the car, including Fornua, were injured but survived. The six occupants included a ring bearer and two bridesmaids.

The group was apparently rushing to the wedding rehearsal of their aunt, who was to be married the next day. Family members had come from all over the Pacific to attend the wedding, which did go on.

Man gets 10 years in crime rampage

An Ewa Beach man who fired two shots out the window of an airport-area hotel room before shooting himself in the head after a 15-hour standoff with police was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Circuit Judge Richard Pollack rejected Arthur Pascual's request to receive probation yesterday and agreed with prosecutors who argued that he was dangerous, said deputy prosecutor Franklin Pacarro.

Pascual's attorney could not be reached for comment.

Pascual pleaded guilty earlier to multiple charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, possessing more than 2 grams of crystal methamphetamine and first-degree terroristic threatening.

He was a suspect in a fire that appeared to have been intentionally set at the Ewa Village home he shared with his wife and two sons. Neighbors said he had been depressed since losing a son in an auto accident two years earlier.
