Makinano’s 27 lifts Sabers
Campbell head coach Robert Samson describes his talented guard Mike Makinano as a "streaky player."
Fortunately for the Sabers, Makinano picked the right night for a red-hot streak, as the junior poured in a game-high 27 points to lead his squad to a 64-45 victory over Moanalua in the quarterfinal round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Division tournament at Kalaheo High School yesterday evening.
Campbell moves on to the semifinal round against Kalaheo on Wednesday at McKinley High. The game's time will be announced early in the week.
"We beat an excellent team tonight," Samson said. "Maybe (Moanalua) isn't as big or athletic, but they're very dangerous and they do everything correctly. We had to minimize our mistakes. Things just went our way tonight; it could have easily gone the other way."
What made Makinano's performance even more impressive was the fact that he was playing with an injured wrist, which he aggravated further when he fell on it early in the game. He says that the injury forced him to spread the ball around more than usual, which opened him up for mid-range jumpers and layups on transition plays when he would sprint out ahead of the defense after his teammates gobbled up rebounds time after time.
"It's just everyone looking down the court for whoever is open," Makinano said of the team's offensive strategy. "One guy should be breaking, and (the rest) just crashing the boards and blocking out."
Both teams looked anxious out of the blocks, tossing errant passes out of bounds and trying to force shots through heavy defensive pressure. Moanalua jumped out to an 8-5 lead thanks in part to a 6-0 run, but Campbell came right back with a 9-0 streak of its own and established a 14-10 advantage to end the first period.
During the short break between quarters, Na Menehune head coach Greg Tacon encouraged his players to cut down on turnovers. They did, and Moanalua pulled to within 17-15 on Kris Lazarou's 3-pointer from the corner with 5 minutes to play in the first half.
But the Sabers (10-3) countered with a 10-0 run of their own, and Na Menehune shooters went cold, connecting on just one shot in the remainder of the second period. Campbell's Rashaad Battle, who accounted for 8 timely points on the night, tipped in a rebound as the final seconds ran off the clock to end the half, giving his team a 29-17 halftime lead.
"We tried to keep them off balance and give them different looks," Samson said. "I think it was just one of those nights for them."
Moanalua (9-5) chipped away at the lead, and after closing the third period trailing 40-31, Na Menehune opened the fourth quarter with an 8-4 run and cut the deficit to 44-39.
But the Sabers didn't let the apparent shift in momentum phase them and went on a 16-0 streak to put the game out of reach. The run was made possible in part by Moanalua's inability to hit shots down the stretch, despite shooters firing away on countless open looks.
In defeat, Na Menehune were led by Stevie Austin, who labored for 13 points, and was the only player on his team to score in double figures.
The win guarantees Campbell one of the OIA's five state championship tournament berths, and puts the Sabers just two wins away from the conference title.
"It should be fun," Makinano said of the upcoming week. "We'll practice really hard, and just be ready for whatever challenges we have ahead of us."
