WAHINE BASKETBALL
Chretien sinks LaTech
RUSTON, La. » Cassidy Chretien sank two free throws with 6.4 seconds left, then Hawaii's defense caused a huge turnover two ticks before the final horn to preserve UH's stunning 60-59 victory over the Louisiana Tech last night.
LaTech's Shan Moore took the ensuing inbounds pass and was dribbling at the top of the key when Janevia Taylor slapped the ball from behind. It went to Pam Tambini's hands as the buzzer went off.
The Rainbow Wahine ended a five-game Western Athletic Conference losing streak here in winning their fourth consecutive game. It is only UH's second win in 19 games against LaTech.
LaTech's five-game winning streak also ended.
Hawaii (11-12, 5-6) led 34-28 at the half and didn't trail until Moore made two free throws to put the Lady Techsters (13-11, 8-3) ahead 59-58 with 18.9 seconds on the clock.
Interim head coach Pat Charity took a time out.
"We wanted Neive (Taylor) to get the ball and dribble one-on-one. We were going to spread the floor to give her room," Charity said. "But they double-teamed Neive and Cassidy was wide open. She got the ball and was fouled.
"Coach (Jim Bolla, who is on medical leave) is going to be so proud of the team. They are playing so hard. They are really coming together."
The Wahine had increased their lead to 39-30 on a jumper in the lane by Chretien, who is from Lake Charles, La., with 15:45 to play.
The Lady Techsters began to slowly catch up, with Moore, who had a game-high 20 points, leading the way. Her jumper from the base line followed by a free throw on a foul called after the shot tied the score at 55-55 with 1:12 remaining.
Moore missed her second free throw and Iwona Zagrobelna rebounded. She was fouled and hit two free throws for a 57-55 UH lead.
LaTech's Tamika Kursh tied the score at 57-57 with two free throws with 54.7 seconds left.
Tanya Smith then gave the Wahine a 58-57 lead with 42.5 seconds on the clock by making her first free throw.
"I kept telling the players they had to hit their free throws down the stretch," Charity said. "(The Lady Techsters) usually come back in the second half, but we held on. We definitely are playing for Coach Bolla and a speedy recovery."
