The Star-Bulletin and Mutual Publishing are teaming up for a second time to produce a cookbook -- working title: "What Hawaii Likes to Eat," to be published in the fall.
Last year's project was "By Request: The Search for Hawaii's Greatest Recipes," which was a compilation of recipes and articles published over many years in the newspaper's recipe request column.
This time, we're starting more or less from scratch, by asking what you, as a resident eater of Hawaii, like best.
The cookbook will be written by the Star-Bulletin's Betty Shimabukuro and Muriel Miura Kaminaka, author of last year's "Japanese Cooking Hawai'i Style," an updated, upscale version of her "Cook Japanese" paperback of the '80s. Kaminaka has written several cookbooks for Mutual.
The new cookbook will be based largely on suggestions from Star-Bulletin readers -- and that's where you fit in.
Imagine yourself talking to a visitor about the foods that best represent the way that Hawaii eats and cooks. Tell us who makes, for example, the best oxtail soup, chicken katsu, squid luau -- it could be a restaurant, a drive-in, your aunty or even you. We'll track down the recipes, or you can provide one if you think you've got the best.
Even if the best dish you remember came from a restaurant that's long gone, we'll try to find it.
A portion of the proceeds from the new book will be donated to the Institute for Human Services. Sales of "By Request" have generated more than $10,000 for IHS to date.
Use this form as a guide, but feel free to attach another sheet with more ideas or comments. Or e-mail, but be sure to include your contact information.
