Tell us about the most ono food you've ever tasted
IT'S TIME for a new cookbook adventure, and this time you're invited along for the ride.
The Star-Bulletin and Mutual Publishing are teaming up again to produce a cookbook -- working title: "What Hawaii Likes to Eat," to be published in the fall.
Last year's project was "By Request: The Search for Hawaii's Greatest Recipes," which was a compilation of recipes and articles published over many years in this column.
This time we're starting more or less from scratch, by asking what you, as a resident eater of Hawaii, like best.
My partner in this quest is Muriel Miura Kaminaka, who also put out a cookbook last year, "Japanese Cooking Hawai'i Style," an updated, upscale version of her "Cook Japanese" paperback of the '80s.
Muriel and I have threatened to team up before, and the time has come. You'll have to get us started, though.
Imagine yourself talking to a visitor about the foods that best represent how Hawaii eats and cooks. Tell us who makes, for example, the best oxtail soup -- a restaurant, drive-in, your aunty ... We'll track down the recipes, or you can provide one if you think you've got the best.
And don't be afraid to reach WAY back. Even if the best dish you remember came from a restaurant that's long gone, we'll try to find it.
A portion of the proceeds from the new book will be donated to the Institute for Human Services. Sales of "By Request" have generated more than $10,000 for IHS to date.
Use this form as a guide, but feel free to attach another sheet with more ideas or comments. Or e-mail, but be sure to include your contact information.
WHAT HAWAII LIKES TO EAT
We're taking suggestions for the best dishes in Hawaii, and the best places to get them, for a new cookbook. Follow our suggested categories, or come up with your own. And if you believe you or someone you know has the best recipe for a particular dish, send that on, too.
