Defense and depth keys to Crusaders victory
He didn't care, really, how the Saint Louis Crusaders would beat Kamehameha.
For Scott Smith, any win over the Warriors is cause to smile. The 6-foot-7, 245-pound senior had 16 points and nine rebounds, but it was Saint Louis' defense and depth that sparked a game-breaking run midway through the second half en route to a 51-36 win last night at Kekuhaupio Gym.
Fourth-ranked Saint Louis improved to 7-2 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play. Kamehameha, ranked 10th, slid to 3-6 in league action.
"I feel good. Kamehameha is our rival in football and basketball," said Smith, an All-State first-team pick at defensive end. "There's nothing like beating them (twice) in my senior year."
A crowd of about 600 saw the host Warriors shackle Saint Louis (16-4 overall) for nearly three quarters. Sophomore Conrad Scheidt's reverse layup gave Kamehameha a 28-26 lead with less than 3 minutes left in the third.
From that point on, however, Kamehameha's 2-3 zone lost its effectiveness as Saint Louis went on a 17-0 blitz. Reserve forward Jamison Miller fed Smith for a couple of low-post buckets, and also scored four points during Saint Louis' run. Miller's 17-footer from the left wing made it 36-28 for Saint Louis as the third quarter ended.
The run continued in the fourth quarter. Lucas Gonsalves drained a 3-pointer, Smith hit another layup under the glass, and Siunipa Fiefia scored easily on the low post as the Crusaders zoomed to a 45-28 lead with 6:15 left to play. Kamehameha finally got a pair of free throws from Pono Hanson, ending a scoreless drought that lasted nearly 6 minutes.
The Warriors got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Enos led Kamehameha with 11 points. With Smith and a posse of defenders in the post ranging from 6-2 to 6-8, Saint Louis was able to apply tremendous on-ball pressure. Enos, normally a tough penetrator, found few open lanes.
"Just the hustle plays, they got the loose balls and outrebounded us," Enos said. "We can't give up."
Kamehameha shot 25 percent from the field (11-for-44) against Saint Louis' man-to-man defense. That includes 3-for-17 accuracy from 3-point range. The Warriors committed only seven turnovers, but were outrebounded 32-24.
"We've gotta go for third place now," he said of the ILH playoff format. The league's third-place team, following the postseason tournament, will travel to the Big Island and play the BIIF's third-place finisher for a state-tourney berth.
Saint Louis held a small lead for most of the first half, but Kamehameha vaulted ahead 23-22 on Enos' 3-pointer to start the third quarter. The Warriors continued to collapse on Smith.
"I wasn't frustrated. If I'm getting doubled and tripled, that means Mona is gonna get open," he said of teammate Solomona Aigamaua.
The 6-2 forward didn't shoot well, but Miller contributed with seven rebounds and three timely assists.
