Written a good book lately?
Aspiring children's book writers and illustrators: The deadline to submit manuscripts and portfolios for a professional critique is Saturday.
The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators annual conference, at the Ala Moana Hotel next month, offers a critique program on March 2 and critique sessions by appointment the next day.
Guest speakers at the March 3 conference will include Jane O'Connor, Tim Gillner, Cheryl Zach, James Rumford and Elaine Masters. Registration deadline is Feb. 23.
The critique program is $40, $30 for society members. Admission to the full conference is $95, $85 members.

Cookie contest
Cookie bakers: Your best work is wanted for Kakaako Kitchen's "Cookies of the Heart" benefit baking contest.
Prizes will include gift certificates to 3660 on the Rise and Kakaako Kitchen.
Submit a favorite recipe by Monday. Twenty-five finalists will be chosen to bake three dozen cookies each for judging Feb. 11 at the Ward Centre restaurant.
The public is invited to share in cookies and coffee for a $2 donation that will go to Aloha Harvest, an organization that feeds Hawaii's hungry. The tasting starts at 5 p.m. Extra cookies will also go to that group.

Valentine's benefit
The American Culinary Federation's Kona-Kohala chapter is hosting a Valentine's Day event featuring miniature desserts by Big Island pastry chefs, chocolatiers and ice cream makers.
"Q'uisine of Hearts with Aloha" will raise funds for nutrition education, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 11 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.
Also on the menu are a bruschetta buffet and wines, as well as a silent auction.
Tickets are $45 (adults) and $20 (children). Proceeds benefit nutrition programs offered by Chefs de Cuisine in Kona and Tutu's House in Waimea, and the Hawaii Island Food Bank's Senior Citizen outreach program. Vegan and quick
Personal chef Leslie Ashburn offers a macrobiotic cooking class, Cooking for Busy People, 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at Hemenway 101, University of Hawaii-Manoa.
The class will cover recipes, techniques and ingredients for making a habit of vegan meals even when time is short.
