Kalaheo retains bragging rights by beating crosstown rival
Kailua still has a way to go to prove it can hang with crosstown rival Kalaheo.
The Surfriders went on a spirited second-half run to cut an 18-point deficit to four with 5 minutes, 40 seconds left, but the Mustangs responded with a big 3-pointer from Cody vonAppen and hit their free throws down the stretch to win 55-49 at McKinley.
Kalaheo guard Cheynne Lishman hit all four of his foul shots in the final 2 minutes to help seal the win and scored 14 points. Cliffton Pires led the way with a game-high 15 points.
Kalaheo, ranked No. 4 in the Star-Bulletin's poll of coaches and media, maintained its vise-like grip on the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East division, improving to 9-1. Kailua fell to 6-4.
Turnovers plagued Kailua in the first half -- the Surfriders committing 10 to Kalaheo's three -- and with the Mustangs shooting 9-for-14 to start the game, Kailua faced a 27-15 halftime deficit.
Surfriders coach Tim Harrison attributed his team's slow start to a lack of confidence.
"We're very nervous when we play Kalaheo," he said. "I don't know why, but we are.
"I don't think our guys believe they can play with the big teams in the East yet. We're as good as they are, we just have to get confidence. Man for man, we can play with everybody."
Harrison reminded his team of that during halftime, and the Surfriders came out with a spark. They went on an 8-0 run to close out the third quarter thanks to senior Tim Maghinay. The guard was a blur, speeding up the court for two fast-break layups and curling around a screen to hit a 10-footer in the lane for six of his 11 points. It was 38-28 Mustangs after three periods.
"I think their run got them excited and we tried to get it back all at once, instead of playing calm," said Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado. "Kailua's got some quickness, it's a good Kailua team, so it was momentum like that and sometimes it's hard to get that back."
When Kailua trimmed the deficit to 39-35, the Mustangs turned to their point guard.
VonAppen didn't disappoint, letting fly an off-balance bomb from 22 feet that rattled, came out, and fell through.
"I just was open and took a shot, thought it was off but it came down. Lucky roll," vonAppen said.
Kailua wasn't done yet. Sophomore forward Kenny Ellis collected an offensive rebound with under 3 minutes left, put the ball back in and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but snuck around the weak side to collect his own rebound and dropped in another pair to bring Kailua to within 45-39. Ellis finished with a team-high 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
But Kalaheo went 5-for-6 at the foul line, including Lishman's four, and got putbacks from Tyler Caswell and Pires to put the Surfriders away.
"They had us pretty scared," Lishman said. "Basically we needed to get points from boards and free throws. We managed to hit 'em, that's all we were working on."
Caswell finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
So what does Kailua need to do to enjoy the level of success Kalaheo has in recent years?
"I think any up-and-coming program, the confidence and the belief that you can win, you need that signature victory to kind of almost validate yourself," said Furtado. "They'll get it -- sooner or later Timmy's going to get it -- (and) hopefully it won't be us."
